How to hide videos on Android
Hiding a video is trickier than hiding a photo. The files are large, galleries aggressively re-scan them, and thumbnails have a habit of showing up where you didn't expect. Here's how to keep private videos genuinely out of reach.
Why videos leak more than photos
- Thumbnails. Android generates preview thumbnails that can linger in caches and other apps even after you "hide" the original.
- Re-scanning. Move a video to a hidden folder and a gallery update can quietly re-index it.
- Size. Big files are tempting to back up automatically - and a cloud backup is a second copy you don't fully control.
- Autoplay previews. Scrubbing through a gallery can surface a frame of exactly the clip you wanted hidden.
What doesn't really work
The .nomedia trick and "archive" features hide videos from the gallery view, but the file stays unencrypted and any file manager reveals it. Renaming the extension (e.g. .mp4 → .txt) breaks playback for you too and fools nothing modern. None of these encrypt anything.
What works: encrypt the video into a vault
The reliable approach is to move the video into an encrypted vault, which both removes it from every gallery and scrambles the file itself.
Umbra encrypts videos the moment you add them
AES-256-GCM, pattern-locked, 100% offline. The original leaves your gallery and the file becomes unreadable off-device.
Step by step
- Open Umbra and draw your pattern.
- Import the videos you want to protect. Each is encrypted with AES-256-GCM as it enters the vault.
- Confirm the originals are removed from your normal gallery (and from any cloud backup folder, if you use one).
- Lock the app. Playback happens inside the vault, so no decrypted copy is left lying around afterwards.
Don't forget the backups
If you had auto-backup on, a copy of the video may already be in the cloud. After moving it into Umbra, check your backup app (Google Photos, your manufacturer's cloud) and remove the cloud copy - otherwise you've locked the front door and left the window open.
