How to hide photos without an app

Updated 2026 · 5 min read

Yes, you can hide photos on Android without installing anything. These methods are fine for keeping clutter out of view - just know exactly what they protect against, and what they don't.

Method 1 - The .nomedia file

  1. Open a file manager and create a folder, e.g. Private.
  2. Inside it, create an empty file named exactly .nomedia.
  3. Move your photos into that folder. Galleries will skip it.

Protects against: photos appearing in your gallery.
Does not protect against: anyone with a file manager who enables "show hidden files." The images are unencrypted and open normally.

Method 2 - A folder name starting with a dot

Renaming a folder to .myfolder hides it from most galleries the same way. Same strength, same weakness: it's invisible to casual scanning, fully visible to anyone who looks with the right setting on.

Method 3 - Secure Folder / Private Space

If you have a Samsung phone (Secure Folder) or Android 15+ (Private Space), you get a genuinely locked, separate area. This is the strongest no-extra-app option. The catch: it's visible that a locked space exists, and there's no decoy - someone can insist you open it.

Method 4 - Google Photos Locked Folder

Built in, hides photos behind your screen lock, keeps them out of backups. Convenient, but it rides on the same lock as your phone and isn't end-to-end encrypted. Full breakdown: Umbra vs Locked Folder.

The honest limit of "no app"

Every no-app method above hides. None of them encrypt the files themselves (except the manufacturer secure areas, which are tied to your device and have no decoy). If your only concern is a tidy gallery, you're done. If the photos genuinely must stay unreadable even to someone holding your unlocked phone, hiding isn't the same as protecting.

Umbra

When hiding isn't enough, encrypt

Umbra is a free vault that encrypts your photos with AES-256 behind a separate pattern - plus a decoy vault for the "open it" moment. No account, no internet permission.
